European Gas Conference: Activists disrupt senior energy executives, global financiers, and international governments at highly securitised ‘Gala Dinner’ to expose the violent human costs of their collusion

On Tuesday evening 28th March, in Vienna, activists disrupted the highly securitised, luxurious European Gas Conference ‘Gala Dinner’ where senior energy executives dined alongside the EU Commission, BlackRock, US Department of Energy, ING Bank, British Embassy, McKinsey Consulting, the International Energy Agency and more. Whilst journalists were denied access, the activists were able to infiltrate and disrupt the event at its secret location, exposing the human costs of a corrupt energy system: neocolonialism, sky-rocketing living costs and climate catastrophe. They repeatedly asked, “at what cost?”.

Ahead of the European Gas Conference (EGC) taking place from March 27-29 in Vienna, Austria, civil society coalitions will take to the streets, taking direct action outside the meeting venue. A counter summit lead by social movements, and civil disobedience of an alliance of justice groups from across the continent will put the climate-damaging, undemocratic and anti-social policies being negotiated behind closed doors under scrutiny and pressure decision-makers to support a just transition to locally-owned, renewable energy for all.
